Do you like your job?

Dear Reader,

In the nine jobs I’ve held in the past 15 years, I’ve learned it’s the company culture that keeps people.

Culture is key.

I was reminded of that this week when I flew to Houston for a work event only to be derailed upon landing by a ridiculous bout of food poisoning. I was lying on the office bathroom floor, embarrassed about getting sick, worrying about how I was going to take care of the tour I had organized for our Chief Finance Officer (CFO) the next morning. But my colleagues came to my rescue.

Two women stepped up to supervise the tour group. One drove me to my hotel, another brought me soup and water. And when I emailed our CFO to let him know I was ill and to brief him on the tour backup plan, he reassured me all would be fine and offered to go to the pharmacy for me. The whole experience had me feeling incredibly grateful to work with people who care about their coworkers and about the work.

I’ve left a lot of bad jobs in my career. There was the nonprofit where no one liked to do the work but everyone had an opinion about it. There was a Diversity & Inclusion firm where the CEO asked if he could come to my bachelorette party (seriously). And there was the video production studio where the owner brushed his teeth while asking me questions (eww).

Should I stay or should I go? It’s a question we all ask ourselves, and it’s fine balance to strike. You need income. But you also need to feel fulfilled.

Or if not fulfilled, at least like your skin doesn’t crawl every time you clock in.
