The Ultimatum on Netflix: 😬

Published almost 2 years ago • 2 min read

Dear Reader,

Have you watched Netflix's The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On yet? The premise, pretty self explanatory: Couples with an ultimatum split for 3 weeks to explore a relationship with another partner. This is obviously a great, healthy way to deal with a relationship on interntaional television 😐

But let's ignore the relationships. I am certainly not qualified to judge anyone's partnership (hello divorced, party of one 🙋🏼‍♀️). But I DID notice one big red flag that had me running for the door. Her name was Rae, and she's 24 years old.

Rae confidently says in her introduction, "I have graduated and I have everything planned out in my life. My next steps, my next career move. Isn't that kinda how it goes, you know? College, then proposal, then babies, then honeymooon in Cancun."

Me:

Oh girl. I want to give this girl a hug.

I believe in women who are go-getters, ball busters, driven to lead. But I am also VERY wary of box chcking. Because we put on our blinders and drive and drive and drive, and we miss the opportunities to explore. We miss the scenery. And all too often, we arrive at our destination and realize it's not all that we built it up to be.

Then we're stuck. We spent all this time investing in this one pathway, one mission. And in a effort to feel that momentum and inertia again, we start grasping for any goal we can find. Fitness challenges. Journaling challenges. Video games. And when that doesn't give us the sense of achievement we're searching for, we jump off that goal and jump on another. I call this the Goal Setting Hamster Wheel.

How do we break out of this cycle? By clarifying our life vision and then setting intentions to live in that vision every day (not some day in the future. Your life is now). That's what Meaningful Momentum helps you do. It's a course designed for perfectionist millennial women who want to feel purpose and contentment without chasing the next big goal.

Here's a sample of what women who have completed Meaningful Momentum have had to say about the course:

It allowed me to see that the things that I had on my “vision board” are already in my reach and I need to take time to dive deeper into that and what I truly want. - Cara

I love any opportunity to learn more about why I am the way I am, and how to improve my performance, my knowledge, or my understanding of myself and the world around me. Your course felt like something I definitely needed at this point in my life, post-pandemic, and post several huge life changes over the last two years that left me wondering who I am now, and what I want going forward. - Adrian

The part that resonated the most with me was the idea of using your past experiences to better define what a life lived for yourself means. Women especially seem often to be pushed to define themselves relationally as someone's mom / wife / employee as opposed to as themselves... I think it is likely very beneficial to a ton of women in their 20s and 30s who are spending time grabbing at milestones. -Emily

In a nutshell: It's a way to figure out what you really want and find ease and contentment in bringing that vision to life.

Have questions about the course? Reply to this email and let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Reader, In the nine jobs I’ve held in the past 15 years, I’ve learned it’s the company culture that keeps people. Culture is key. I was reminded of that this week when I flew to Houston for a work event only to be derailed upon landing by a ridiculous bout of food poisoning. I was lying on the office bathroom floor, embarrassed about getting sick, worrying about how I was going to take care of the tour I had organized for our Chief Finance Officer (CFO) the next morning. But my...

Dear Reader, Welcome to April! We are officially 1/3 through 2022 (cue panic). My question to you: If you set a New Year's Resolution, how's it going? Nearly 80% of people abandon their New Year's Resolutions by February. Too often we set goals because we feel like we HAVE to set them. But we also do it because that goal setting process is kind of fun. Dreaming of the future and what could be is motivating. But eventually we lose steam. Life gets in the way. We get bored. So we put our goal...

Dear Reader, I love a fitness challenge. And by love, I mean love to follow for a few weeks until I get board and then faceplant into a pint of Ben & Jerrys. I consider myself a recovering yo-yo dieter. For years I've been determined to get in the best shape of my life. Alas, life often gets in the way, and getting in the best shape of my life is frequently followed by getting in the not-so-best shape of my life. There I found myself in 2020, ready to re-focus and really get in the best shape...
